PBM Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level light therapy (LLLT), is a non-invasive light-based therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. The light is applied to targeted areas of the body with the aim of supporting normal cellular activity and tissue recovery. Unlike surgical lasers, PBM does not cut, burn or deliberately heat tissue.

PBM is thought to work when light energy is absorbed by light-sensitive structures within cells, including mitochondria, which are involved in energy production. This may help support the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), encourage healthy cell signalling, improve local microcirculation, and assist the body’s natural repair processes. The response to PBM can vary depending on the wavelength, dose, treatment time, power output, treatment area, and individual circumstances.

Photobiomodulation is generally considered a gentle therapy when used appropriately, but it should be provided in line with the relevant device guidance and by, or under the advice of, a suitably trained professional. PBM should not be used as a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Anyone with a complex medical condition, implanted device, history of cancer, pregnancy, eye sensitivity or concerns about suitability should seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before treatment.

Photobiomodulation is used to treat

  • Post-surgical healing, scar healing and post-injury rehabilitation support
  • Lymphoedema, support lymphatic flow, reduce swelling and improve tissues
  • Inflammatory conditions where improved circulation and tissue recovery may be beneficial
  • Musculoskeletal pain, including back, neck, shoulder, knee and joint pain
  • Arthritis-related pain and stiffness
  • Sports injuries, sprains, strains and soft-tissue inflammation
  • Tendon and ligament irritation
  • Wound healing and tissue repair
  • Nerve-related pain and recovery support
