Negative Pressure Therapy

Negative pressure therapy, also known as electronic cupping, is a modern treatment that uses controlled suction to gently lift the skin, fascia and underlying soft tissue. Instead of pressing down into the body like traditional massage, the device creates a decompressive effect that lifts and releases the tissues. This lifting action can help encourage local blood flow, support lymphatic drainage, reduce tissue tension and promote relaxation.

Electronic cupping allows the level of suction to be controlled more precisely than traditional fire or manual cupping, so the pressure can be adapted to your comfort level, treatment goals and the sensitivity of the area being worked on. The aim is to create a therapeutic lift in the tissues, not to cause trauma.

Unlike some forms of traditional cupping where strong static suction may deliberately leave visible circular marks, electronic negative pressure therapy does not intentionally cause bruising. Mild redness or temporary marks may sometimes appear as circulation increases in the area, but the treatment is usually performed with controlled suction and movement to minimise unnecessary bruising and keep the experience comfortable.

Negative pressure therapy is best used as a supportive treatment rather than a replacement for medical care. It may not be suitable for everyone, including people with certain skin conditions, blood clotting issues, active infections, uncontrolled medical conditions or those who bruise very easily. A consultation should be carried out before treatment to check suitability and choose the most appropriate pressure level.

Negative pressure therapy can help with

  • Scars, scar tissue, atrophic scars and skin smoothing: Can be beneficial for helping soften and mobilise scar tissue by gently lifting the skin and surrounding fascia. For atrophic scars, such as indented or pitted scarring, the controlled suction may help stimulate local circulation, support tissue movement and encourage a smoother, more flexible feel to the area over time. It can also be used to support skin smoothing and the appearance of post-cosmetic surgery scarring once the area is fully healed and treatment has been confirmed as suitable. Results vary depending on the age, depth and type of scar.
  • Swelling and fluid retention: Gentle suction can support lymphatic drainage, helping the body move excess fluid from congested or puffy areas.
  • Muscle tension and tightness: Helps release areas of restriction by lifting and decompressing the soft tissue, making it useful for tight shoulders, neck, back and legs.
  • Aches and general discomfort: May help ease everyday muscular aches by increasing local circulation and reducing sensitivity in overworked areas.
  • Sports recovery and delayed onset muscle soreness: Can support recovery after exercise by encouraging blood flow, reducing stiffness and helping muscles feel looser.
  • Restricted mobility: Can help improve tissue glide and flexibility where tight fascia or muscle tension is limiting movement.
  • Postural tension: Useful for tension linked to desk work, repetitive movement or prolonged standing, especially around the upper back, shoulders and hips.
  • Relaxation and stress-related tightness: The lifting sensation can calm the nervous system and support relaxation, which may reduce muscle guarding and stress-related tension.
