Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a gentle, hands-on therapy that works with the ‘fascia’, the connective tissue that surrounds and supports the muscles, organs, nerves and skin. When the body experiences injury, surgery or trauma, the fascia can become tight, restricted or stuck, which may contribute to discomfort, reduced movement, swelling, pulling sensations and changes in posture or tissue mobility.

After surgery, scar tissue forms as part of the body’s natural healing process. However, scars and adhesions can sometimes become dense, tight or less mobile, causing the skin and underlying tissues to feel tethered. Myofascial release can help soften and mobilise these restrictions by encouraging better tissue glide, improving circulation and supporting lymphatic flow. This may help the scar area feel more comfortable, flexible and integrated with the surrounding tissue.

Pre-operatively, myofascial release may help prepare the body by reducing areas of tension, improving tissue mobility and supporting relaxation before a procedure. Post-operatively, once the surgeon or medical team has confirmed that hands-on treatment is safe, it can be used to support recovery from both medical and cosmetic surgery, including procedures such as abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast surgery, facial surgery and other body-contouring treatments.

Treatment is usually applied slowly and sensitively, working around or near the affected area rather than forcing the tissue. The aim is not to erase a scar, but to improve comfort, mobility, scar pliability and the way the tissues move together. Myofascial release can be particularly helpful when scars feel tight, raised, puckered, numb, sensitive or restrictive.

Uses of myofascial release:

  • Supports scar tissue mobility and flexibility
  • Helps reduce tightness, pulling and restricted movement around scars
  • May help soften adhesions and improve tissue glide
  • Encourages healthy circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Can support swelling reduction when appropriate after surgery
  • Helps improve comfort and range of movement following surgery
  • Supports pre-operative tissue preparation and relaxation
  • Can be used as part of post-operative recovery once medically cleared
  • May be helpful after cosmetic surgery, including liposuction, tummy tuck, breast surgery, facial surgery and body contouring
  • Helps reduce compensatory tension in surrounding muscles and fascia
  • Supports improved posture, ease of movement and overall body comfort
  • May help scars feel less raised, puckered, sensitive or tethered over time
