Lymphoedema Treatment
Lymphoedema is a long-term swelling caused by a problem with the lymphatic system, which helps drain excess fluid from the body. When lymph fluid can’t drain properly, it builds up in the tissues and causes swelling—most often in an arm or leg, but it can also affect the face, chest, abdomen or genital area.
Lymphoedema treatment aims to reduce swelling, improve comfort and movement, and lower the risk of complications such as skin infection. Although lymphoedema is usually a long-term condition, it can often be well managed with the right treatment plan and ongoing self-care.
The four cornerstones of lymphoedema treatment are:
- Skincare
- Weight management
- Physical activity
- Compression
Skincare helps protect the skin; keep it moisturised and reduce the risk of infection. Maintaining a healthy weight can improve lymphatic flow and reduce pressure on the tissues. Regular physical activity helps the muscles move lymph fluid more effectively through the body. Compression garments or wraps support the affected area, help control swelling, and prevent fluid from building up again.
Treatment is tailored to each person’s needs and will generally include specialist assessment, advice and other therapies where appropriate. Early support and regular review can help keep symptoms under control and support long-term management.
