Compression Garment Measure and Select

Medical compression garment measuring and selection is the process of assessing a person’s limb shape, size, clinical needs and lifestyle in order to choose the most appropriate compression garment. Compression garments, such as stockings, socks, sleeves, wraps or made-to-measure garments, apply controlled pressure to the body to support blood flow, encourage lymphatic drainage and help reduce swelling. Accurate measuring is essential because a garment that is too loose may not provide enough therapeutic benefit, while one that is too tight or poorly fitted may cause discomfort, skin damage or circulation problems.

During measuring, key points of the limb are recorded using a soft tape measure, usually at standard positions such as the ankle, calf, thigh, wrist or arm, depending on the garment required. Length measurements are also taken to make sure the garment sits correctly and does not roll, bunch or dig into the skin. The measurements are then compared with the manufacturer’s sizing guide to determine whether an off-the-shelf garment is suitable or whether a made-to-measure option is needed.

Selection also involves choosing the correct compression level, fabric type, garment style and ease of application. Clinical assessment is important, particularly for lower-limb compression, because conditions such as arterial disease, fragile skin, acute infection or suspected deep vein thrombosis may affect whether compression is safe or appropriate. The aim is to provide a garment that delivers effective therapeutic pressure while remaining comfortable enough for regular wear.

Medical compression can be used to help treat or manage:

  • Chronic oedema and lymphoedema
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Varicose veins
  • Venous leg ulcers and prevention of ulcer recurrence
  • Swelling after injury or surgery
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome
  • Deep vein thrombosis risk reduction, where clinically appropriate
  • Pregnancy-related leg swelling or varicose veins
  • Arm or hand swelling following surgery or cancer treatment
  • Heavy, aching or tired legs associated with poor venous return
