Medical Compression Bandaging

Medical compression bandaging is a specialist treatment used to apply firm, controlled pressure to an area affected by lymphoedema. Lymphoedema happens when lymph fluid does not drain properly and builds up in the tissues, causing swelling, heaviness and sometimes discomfort. Compression bandages help by supporting the tissues and encouraging fluid to move away from the swollen area through the lymphatic system.

Bandaging is often used as part of decongestive lymphatic therapy, alongside skin care, exercise and sometimes manual lymphatic drainage. It is usually applied by a trained lymphoedema practitioner, especially when swelling is more severe, the limb shape is difficult to fit into a garment, or a short period of intensive treatment is needed before moving on to compression hosiery or garments.

The pressure from the bandages works best when combined with movement. As the muscles contract during walking, stretching or gentle exercise, the bandages provide resistance, helping the muscles to pump fluid out of the affected limb and reduce further build-up.

  • Reduces swelling by encouraging lymph fluid to drain from the affected area.
  • Helps prevent fluid from building up again after treatment or massage.
  • Supports the limb and can improve comfort, heaviness and tightness.
  • Helps reshape the limb so that compression garments may fit better later on.
  • Works alongside exercise, skin care and other lymphoedema treatments.
  • Should be applied correctly by, or under the guidance of, a trained lymphoedema professional.
